Posted in Hebron

My posting for the next 3 months is Hebron in the West Bank, Occupied Palestinian Territory. Hebron, Al-Halil in Arabic,  is a mid-sized city south of Bethlehem and Jerusalem. I am the first Canadian Ecumenical Accompanier (EA) to go to Hebron. Part of my duties will be to accompany school children and youth to and from school. This community and its school children has suffered violence and harassment by armed settlers with little protection from the Israeli authorities.

While this will be a challenging mission, I look forward learning from those who live through the harassment day after day, with faith still intact. As an Ecumenical Accompanier I hope to provide,  “a protective presence to vulnerable communities,            to collect data and case studies for international agencies and to give a voice to those who have none.”

(Quotation taken from the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel, EAPPI, 2010 brochure)
